What Are My Options for Braces?

By sacramento ortho, auburn ortho, Orthodontics

woman with bracesWhat do you think of when you hear braces? Colorful, bulky metal brackets? Awkward middle schoolers? Well, think again. As braces have become increasingly popular with both preteens, teens, and adults alike, traditional metal braces have become more discrete in nature. We offer a wider range of orthodontic options.

At Markham Orthodontics, we offer traditional metal braces, clear ceramic braces, and Invisalign® to those seeking to improve and straighten their smile. If you’re looking for orthodontics in Sacramento, our team of dental professionals offers top-notch, gentle service to patients of all ages. Dr. David Markham and Dr. Steven Scott are prepared and excited to work with you to achieve a beautiful, straight smile. Contact our Sacramento, CA dental office today at 916-924-8970 to schedule an appointment.

Here are the three types of braces we offer:

1. Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional braces have become more inconspicuous over time. That, and the fact that traditional metal braces offer a variety of benefits, convinces many people to choose them. Here are some of the advantages of choosing traditional metal braces:

  • They are less expensive than other orthodontic options.
  • They require less responsibility and discipline from the patient.
  • They treat more complex orthodontic issues.
  • They provide quicker results compared to Invisalign®.

Don’t write off traditional braces because of assumptions about their appearance. Ask Dr. Markham or Dr. Scott to show you pictures of patients they have treated with traditional metal braces so you can have a realistic and accurate idea of how they look.

2. Ceramic braces

Clear ceramic braces are an effective alternative to traditional metal braces, especially for those who are more self-conscious about their smile. There are many other benefits of ceramic braces, including:

  • Durability
  • Customizable arch wire
  • Easily removed
  • Don’t damage tooth enamel
  • Work faster than Invisalign®

Keep in mind that while these are effective, they are vulnerable to staining and aren’t as strong as traditional braces. Ceramic braces are also more expensive than traditional braces. However, many adult patients are willing to pay a little more to have braces that are highly effective and have low visibility.

3. Invisalign®

Invisible aligners have become increasingly popular among older patients and for good reason. Patients are able to avoid brackets and wires altogether while achieving a beautiful smile.

Invisalign® requires that patients wear the custom-made plastic aligners over their teeth for 22 hours a day. New aligners are created and placed every two weeks to continually shift the patient’s teeth.

Major advantages of Invisalign® include:

  • No food or drink restrictions
  • Easy maintenance
  • Aesthetically pleasing and discreet treatment

Some disadvantages to invisible aligners include:

  • More orthodontic appointments
  • More expensive in some cases
  • Can’t be used for serious orthodontic problems
  • Require more dedication and responsibility on the part of the patient

Many patients believe the benefits of Invisalign® far outweigh the disadvantages, and they are a proven treatment for a wide range of alignment issues. Find out if you are a candidate for invisible aligners by visiting with one of our experienced orthodontists.

If the thought of braces gives you flashbacks to your awkward middle school years, you’re not alone. Many adults feel like braces are only for adolescents when, truthfully, braces are for everyone. In fact, more and more adults are improving their smile’s appearance, health, and function with braces. Whether you are 25 or 85, if you want to straighten your crooked or crowded teeth, braces are for you!

Advantages of Adult Braces

As we advance in age, oral complications become more prevalent. Braces have the two-fold ability to correct your oral problems while enhancing your smile. Here are three issues braces can correct:

  1. Crowded teeth: Overcrowded teeth are much more difficult to keep clean and often cause cavities and gum disease. By straightening your teeth, the spaces where debris and bacteria hide will no longer be present. This provides you with a more beautiful and healthier smile.
  2. TMJ disorder: Temporomandibular joint disorder can cause headaches, joint stress, and muscle pain. Braces will correct your bite and allow your teeth to better align. This will reduce the likelihood of teeth grinding or clenching that causes TMJ disorder.
  3. Sleep apnea: Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by a physical obstruction in the upper airway. Braces can expand your upper and lower arches to make room for your tongue and surrounding soft tissues, thus allowing uninterrupted air movement.

When you visit with one of our orthodontists, he will examine your teeth and mouth for any issues while addressing them accordingly. He may suggest additional orthodontic treatments so you can have a healthy smile.

Types of Adult Braces

At Markham Orthodontics, we provide a variety of braces options to meet every need. Our most popular options include:

Traditional metal braces

The visibility of metal braces is a huge turn-off for most patients. However, as dentistry has progressed, many aesthetic improvements have been made. Our orthodontists offer brackets and wires that are less visible yet just as effective. Traditional braces are best for those with extremely crowded or crooked teeth, an overbite or underbite, and other more severe dental issues.

Clear bracket braces

Clear braces are essentially the same as traditional metal braces except that the brackets are made from ceramic, which can be a blessing and a curse. Ceramic is more aesthetically pleasing, but they are also more prone to staining and discoloration. However, these are still a great option for anyone who is concerned about the appearance of metal braces and dental issues that require the strength that brackets and wires provide.

Invisalign®

Clear aligners have become an increasingly popular choice for adult braces because of their discreet appearance. Invisalign® provides effective treatment for patients whose teeth need minor adjustments. The clear aligners afford patients the freedom to remove their aligners while eating. No more worrying about food getting caught between teeth and braces! However, because clear aligners are removable, they are easily misplaced, lost, or thrown away.

How Do Braces Work?

mom and daughter with bracesIn our selfie and Instagram culture, everyone wants a beautiful, straight smile. That’s one reason why orthodontics has become increasingly popular among teens and adults alike over the past decade. Traditional metal, ceramic, invisible, and lingual braces are all great options for those who desire a major smile upgrade. But have you ever wondered how they work? Our esteemed orthodontists, Dr. David Markham and Dr. Steven Scott, explain exactly how braces move your teeth.

If you or your teenager needs braces, there’s no reason to wait. We offer treatments to fit every lifestyle. Contact our friendly team at Markham Orthodontics today at 916-525-8566 to schedule a consultation.

How Braces Move Teeth

Teeth are not fixed. They can be shifted over time because they are suspended inside the bone, not attached. The boney structures are surrounded by periodontal ligaments that compress and stretch when pressure from the braces is applied. New bone forms in the space that has been vacated while existing bone is reabsorbed to make room for tooth movements.

Many people wonder if this process damages the teeth and surrounding structures. Actually, it helps strengthen your teeth. Just as lifting weights makes muscles stronger, your teeth and jawbone grow stronger when they work against the pressure that is being applied to them.

Components of Braces

Braces consist of several components. Depending on your situation, other parts may be necessary, but the basics include:

Brackets

These are the tiny metal or ceramic links that are bonded to each tooth with a strong adhesive.

Archwire

This long piece of wire stretches from one side of the mouth to another. The metal wire encourages correct alignment by pulling your teeth together.

O-Rings

These colorful or clear elastic bands connect the archwire to the bracket. They are responsible for most of your tooth movement and often need to be switched out every time you visit your orthodontist.

Spacers

Also known as orthodontic separators, these are made of either rubber bands or metal and are about a centimeter in diameter. Spacers work to push molars apart to create more room in the mouth. You could need up to eight spacers if you have extremely crowded teeth.

Molar Bands

Not everyone needs molar bands, which are also known as orthodontic bands. These bands are custom made for each patient to correct overbites, underbites, and extreme misalignment. Once created, they are placed and cemented onto your back teeth and then anchored to the archwire.

Benefits of Braces

Straight teeth don’t just make your smile more attractive — they improve your oral health. Crowded, misaligned teeth are more susceptible to tooth decay, gum disease, and bone erosion.

Braces can also correct embarrassing or frustrating speech patterns. By altering the position of your teeth, your speech will become sharper, and your ability to pronounce certain words will become more distinct. Closing a gap in your teeth can also improve impediments such as a whistle or lisp.

Your digestion could also be impacted by a straighter smile. Correctly aligned teeth break down food much more effectively, allowing your stomach to easily digest and process food.

Benefits of Clear Bracket Braces

Many adults love this option because of its discreet appearance, but there are more advantages of ceramic braces.

  • Effectiveness of traditional braces: Ceramic braces work like traditional braces in that each bracket is attached to a tooth, and a wire runs through the brackets. Adjusting the wire in particular areas allows us to use gentle pressure to move teeth. Metal or clear bracket braces work well for people with issues like overbite, misaligned teeth, and gapped teeth.
  • Use of epoxy: The bonding adhesive for ceramic is not as harsh on tooth enamel as the adhesive required for metal braces.
  • Less patient responsibility: Remembering to clean clear aligners regularly and wear them 22+ hours per day can be difficult for Invisalign patients. Because aligners are removable, they can get misplaced or inadvertently thrown away. With ceramic braces, all you need to do is maintaining good oral hygiene, and we’ll show you how.
  • Comfort: Although they are made of brackets and wires like traditional braces, clear ceramic braces do not scratch and irritate the soft tissues of the mouth like metal. Patients typically don’t need to use wax as often.

Disadvantages of Clear Bracket Braces

There are only two common complaints:

  1. They are more expensive than traditional braces.
  2. They stain easily.

As for cost of clear bracket braces, we believe the benefits are worth it! We also want you to have the braces of your choice no matter the cost, so we offer payment options that suit just about any budget. To learn more about financing, call the office to talk with a member of our staff today.

There are a few things you can do to prevent clear bracket discoloration:

  • Limit the amount of coffee, tea, and sodas you drink or use a straw for all dark beverages.
  • Brush after meals.
  • Floss after meals.

If you maintain these practices, staining is less likely.

Enjoy Discreet Orthodontics with White Braces

By Blog, Braces, Orthodontics

If you have concerns about the prominence of traditional metal braces then you may be an ideal candidate for white braces. Unlike traditional metal braces, ceramic braces do not use metal brackets to adhere bands to teeth. Many adults and children prefer the orthodontic option because the attachments are discreet.

Dr. David Markham offers multiple orthodontic treatments for patients in and around Sacramento, CA. If you are looking for an experienced and qualified dentist, Dr. Markham has an advanced degree in dentistry and a Certificate in Orthodontics in addition to his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of the Pacific.

Are White Braces Right for Me?

While Invisalign treatments continue to grow in popularity, there are still multiple benefits to undergoing orthodontic treatments through traditional braces. Traditional braces give Dr. Markahm better control over the treatment process and the final cosmetic results. Braces are also better equipped to correct conditions like crowding and issues that pertain to the bottom teeth. If you are the parent of a teenager, you won’t have to worry about patient compliance because the appliance is not removable.

During your consultation with Dr. Markham, he will guide you through the benefits of undergoing traditional braces vs Invisalign. If you decide to undergo traditional braces, you can opt for ceramic braces. Ceramic braces allow you to feel confident when smiling or taking photos throughout treatment. Many of our Sacramento area patients who are reluctant to get braces to opt for ceramic braces once they learn about the many benefits.

Ceramic braces generally come at a higher cost compared to metal braces. Patients will need to weigh pricing when considering this option. Metal braces tend to tolerate pressure and shifting better than ceramic braces can. If you are needing to correct significant levels of teeth misalignment, Dr. Markham an experienced orthodontist in Sacramento may recommend metal brackets to avoid appliance breakage.

Caring for Ceramic Braces

Special care should be taken any time you are wearing braces. Additional care will be needed for maintaining ceramic braces. Unlike metal, the ceramic material can become discolored for the same reasons that teeth can become stained. It is important to avoid or cut back on certain drinks and foods that can discolor teeth, such as tea, coffee, wine, and sports drinks. Brushing after drinking these liquids can reduce the chances of discoloration occurring. Do not use whitening treatments to correct ceramic bracket discoloration. Investing in an electric toothbrush is another useful tool for preventing tooth discoloration.

Who Is a Candidate for White Braces?

Candidates for ceramic braces have all of their adult teeth and have stopped growing. If you wish to correct misalignment issues with your teeth in a discreet manner, ceramic braces are an ideal option. Candidates should be willing to clean and maintain their braces to prevent unwanted decay.

Ceramic brackets are not as durable as metal, so individuals with significant misalignment may not be ideal candidates for this treatment. Athletes or patients who require extensive mouth movements for their profession may be at a higher risk for breaking ceramic braces. If a bracket does break, Dr. Markham can fix the breakage during a visit to our office.

Enjoy Discreet Orthodontics with White Braces

There are few tradeoffs and many benefits to choosing ceramic braces for teeth straightening. During your orthodontic consultation, Dr. Markham will explain the benefits of white braces in detail. Many of our patients enjoy the discreet alternative to metal braces. To schedule your consultation with our office, please contact our staff online or call (916) 924-8970.
