Dental patients who make the decision to wear braces look forward to the results they will eventually enjoy. It is equally important, though, to understand the basics of braces care while you wear them.  Dr. David Markham and the team at Markham Orthodontics in Sacramento, CA, provide a variety of options for traditional or clear braces that can help you achieve long-lasting results and a beautiful smile.

How do I take care of my braces?

When braces are set on your teeth, there is an adjustment period. You may stand in front of the mirror and take in the fact that you have a whole new look and feel to your mouth and teeth. As you become accustomed to your braces, you will also want to discover the best practices for caring for your teeth while you wear braces. Once you know the basics, you will be able to practice good oral hygiene that will help ensure the health of your teeth and gums while you wear braces – and once they come off!

Back to basics: Brush, floss, repeat.

It may sound simple, but thoroughly brushing your teeth twice per day is an essential part of keeping your teeth healthy and your braces clean. The foods you eat can build up on your braces, and beverages can leave residue, too. You will definitely want to brush away the starches and sugars. If left too long, they can collect on your teeth and cause plaque or potentially tartar and tooth decay.

When you get ready to brush your teeth, be sure to take out elastics if you are wearing them. Next, use a quality fluoride toothpaste and brush thoroughly (read: not roughly). As you brush, gently work the bristles of your toothbrush into the various areas of your teeth and braces. Floss to remove any food particles that are left between your teeth. If you have questions about flossing, ask Dr. Markham about the best ways to floss while wearing traditional braces.

Foods matter.

Most of us know that a healthy diet is important for our overall health, but did you know that the types of food you eat can impact your braces? Consider limiting foods that can possibly damage your braces or that have a high amount of acid in them. For example, tomato-based foods, soft drinks, grains, and processed foods can have high acid content. Foods that have lower acid levels include many fruits and vegetables, water, eggs, cucumbers, and avocado. Limiting acidic foods can help you preserve your tooth enamel.
