Does the process of getting braces hurt?

THE PLACEMENT OF BRACES

While the actual placement of braces is painless, a patient may feel discomfort for the first three or so days after braces are placed. The reason for the discomfort is because the teeth are shifting and realigning, leading to pressure and a dull, aching feeling in the teeth. Braces can also cause headaches and soreness in the mouth and this pain can also usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medicine (OTC).

ADJUSTMENT OF BRACES

It’s normal for patients to feel some discomfort immediately after Dr. Markham tightens their braces, and the “tight” feeling should go away in a few days. Once again: OTC pain medications are helpful here.

For the first few days after getting your braces, or after an adjustment, it’s recommended to try to eat softer foods, such as soup, pasta and yogurt. Patients must learn how to properly brush teeth with braces and how to floss under the wires to prevent inflammation of the gums and development of cavities.
